Imagine this. Sokha is a 10-year-old boy, born and raised in a village about ten minutes by tuk-tuk from the center of Siem Reap. Out there, the glow of Pub Street never reaches. There are no modern supermarkets, no international schools. The school Sokha attends is small, and although he can read and write, no one has ever taught him how to choose what to eat in a way that supports his health, or spoken to him about the emotional toolkit every child should develop to face the journey of life.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! One day, while Sokha is at home caring for his grandmother as his parents work in the fields, a group of people arrives. Thanks to a donation from Ms. Smith—an American traveler visiting Siem Reap who chose to stay at the luxury boutique hotel Jaya House River Park—these people hand him two books. One is designed to teach children about nutrition, the other to help them navigate this journey we call life.
Speaking of journeys, the books have traveled a long way. After booking her stay at Jaya House River Park, Ms. Smith learned how simply staying there allows guests to make a real difference in the lives of local communities. A retired teacher, she was especially moved by an initiative launched by the hotel called the Nutritional Book Drive, whose goal is to provide underprivileged children with books on nutrition and mental health.
Since both books are available on Amazon from anywhere in the world, a couple of weeks before her trip to Cambodia, Ms. Smith ordered them. When the package arrived, her eyes lit up with joy. She could already picture the happiness of the children who would receive them.
She carefully placed the books in her suitcase, between clothes and personal belongings, and they traveled with her all the way to Siem Reap. Once at the hotel, they were handed to the staff at Jaya House River Park, who made sure they reached Sokha and other children like him. Now Sokha reads them with excitement—captivated by the illustrations, wide-eyed as he discovers things he had never even heard of before.
In the evenings, he often reads them out loud to his younger siblings. And he already knows that once he finishes the books, he’ll take them to school so his classmates can read them too.
The journey of the books in the Nutritional Book Drive represents the true meaning of travel—the kind that begins long before boarding a plane, when a genuine, human connection is formed between people who have never met. As a five-star boutique hotel focused on experiential travel and social impact, Jaya House River Park plays a vital role in making that journey possible—not only for the books, but for its guests as well, even before they arrive.
What is the Nutritional Book Drive
The Nutritional Book Drive is an initiative launched by Jaya House River Park to bring books about nutrition and mental health to children who would otherwise have no access to this kind of knowledge—knowledge that is essential for healthy growth. At the same time, the initiative supports tree planting along the river and in community spaces throughout Siem Reap.
Since 2016, Jaya House River Park has planted more than 2,000 trees across the city, helping transform it into a greener, more livable place for both residents and visitors. The cost of planting a tree ranges from $25 to $50, depending on the type and size. Guests who choose Jaya House River Park as their “home away from home” can contribute directly to this effort, supporting the mission of raising awareness about climate change within the local community.
The two books selected for the Nutritional Book Drive are:
- Nutrition Facts for Kids (ages 8–12), which introduces children to the basics of nutrition and health.
• How to Pack for the Journey Called Life – A Travel Guide for Kids (ages 10+), which takes a holistic approach to both physical and mental well-being, encouraging children to live intentionally and happily.
I have my own copies of these books, and I can honestly say they’re beautifully written. The language is engaging and age-appropriate, enriched by colorful illustrations that sometimes make you smile and often reinforce key concepts at a glance.
They tackle topics of fundamental importance for a child’s development: what we eat, how we take care of ourselves as a whole, how we learn to manage emotions, relate to others, and find our own path. These elements shape not only the life we’ll live, but the person we’ll become.
That’s why it’s so important to learn these concepts from an early age—and that’s exactly what the Nutritional Book Drive aims to do. In Cambodia, Nutrition Facts for Kids carries an even deeper meaning, as it can help address the issue of malnutrition by teaching children how to eat well.
What makes these books truly special, in my opinion, is that they are gifts sent from afar—acts of love, of connection.
Before even leaving for Cambodia, you can purchase one or both books on Amazon and already feel connected to this extraordinary country and its people. This isn’t about charity. It’s about sharing—about contributing to the well-being of children and their families in a way that is genuine and respectful.
Other ways Jaya House River Park makes a difference
Staying at Jaya House River Park means choosing a luxury boutique hotel where every experience is tailored to the guest. It also means embracing a more responsible, experiential way of traveling by supporting the hotel’s initiatives—like the Nutritional Book Drive, but also community support programs and the #SingleUsePlasticFree campaign, aligned with UNWTO, WTO, and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
Guests love this approach—so much so that many choose the hotel specifically for its commitment to reducing plastic use. Others arrive without ever having thought deeply about the impact of plastic, only to leave with a new awareness and a more responsible mindset that stays with them long after their trip ends.
This initiative also includes training for the hotel’s all-Khmer staff on plastic use and management, as well as close collaboration with suppliers. Linen bags are used for deliveries and exchanged each time, while meat and fish suppliers use reusable, sealable containers.
As for community support, simply staying at Jaya House River Park contributes to three NGOs:
• Green Gecko Center for Street Children, which uses a long-term, holistic approach to transform the lives of former street-working families.
• The Cambodian Landmine Relief Fund, dedicated to demining efforts in a country still heavily affected by landmines.
• Small Art School Siem Reap, a self-funded organization offering free art classes to talented children who cannot afford them.
A stay where luxury meets responsibility
The world is full of luxury hotels. And yet, Jaya House River Park stands apart as an oasis of peace, exclusivity, and purpose.
It’s easy, watching the news every day, to feel discouraged—to see a world drifting further off course and feel powerless. What can we really do, as individuals, to ease even a small part of that pain?
The answer doesn’t have to be grand. A single drop, joined by others, becomes the ocean whose waves reach distant shores and gently touch countless lives.
Jaya House River Park doesn’t promise to “change the world” with empty slogans. It takes action—real, measurable action—year after year.
And guests can see it with their own eyes. Even before stepping inside, they find themselves surrounded by a lush, green landscape of trees planted along the river, creating an immediate sense of calm that only nature can offer.
Inside, the organic Jaya Organics products—available in rooms, at the spa, and online—serve as a constant reminder of the hotel’s commitment to sustainability, responsible plastic use, and the fight against climate change.
The books from the Nutritional Book Drive are bridges between countries—arrows shot from one person to another, capable of truly changing lives. They don’t expire. They pass from hand to hand, enriching one life after another, helping children grow with the knowledge they need for their well-being.
One day, these children will become parents. And it will feel natural for them to teach their own kids how to care for themselves, how to eat well, how to be heard and understood.
And it doesn’t stop there. Parents, grandparents, and relatives read these books too—or learn from the children themselves. Even adults who never had access to this knowledge begin to change the way they eat and take care of themselves, becoming more aware of their mental health as well.
This is the ripple effect. These books don’t just change one child’s life—they touch families and communities one generation after the other.
Choosing Jaya House River Park means choosing action over empty words. Because despite what we’re often led to believe, we are not powerless.
Sometimes, all we need is a place like this—grounded in experience, driven by real results, and guided by a deeply human heart—to show us where to begin.
Experiential travel at Jaya House River Park
Experiential travel puts the traveler at the center. It’s slow, intentional, shaped by genuine encounters, human exchange, and moments that go far beyond typical tourist experiences.
While Jaya House River Park offers classic tours—like visits to the temples of Angkor—it is the perfect choice for travelers who are tired of rushed vacations and are seeking something more authentic.
With years of experience in the heart of Siem Reap and a deep connection to the local community, the hotel creates tailored experiences: visits to lesser-known areas, quiet moments at the nearby pagoda, conversations with staff members who open a window into a fascinating world.
Day by day, your rhythm slows. You check your email less. You stop scrolling. Your attention shifts—from notifications to the flight of a bird as you relax by the pool, to the laughter of children from the nearby school.
Jaya House River Park is an experience that awakens you.
The world slows down, and in that stillness, you begin to notice more. Your gaze sharpens. Your smile softens. Your awareness deepens. Walking barefoot through the lush greenery, you feel the earth beneath your feet and realize that the constant rush of modern life isn’t the only reality.
You can still choose.
Choose a life of conscious decisions—made naturally here.
Choose a life where you are no longer just an observer, but an active participant.
Choose a life rooted in the present, where the virtual fades into the background.
Choose a life where you make a difference.
A life where two simple books in your suitcase remind you of what it means to be a child—and that every child deserves access to their rights. They remind you of your dreams, your ideals, the things that still make your heart beat.
Jaya House River Park is a reminder that one action is worth more than a thousand words—and that the only way to truly feel alive is through connection: giving and receiving something equally meaningful in return.
And living.
Because here, life is in every action, every detail, every gesture.
It’s in the eyes of a child receiving those books you carried across the world. As he flips through the pages, a look of wonder spreads across his face, and his eyes light up in a way they never have before.
At first, it might look like hope.
But if you look closer, you’ll see it clearly.
It’s the certainty that his life has changed for the better.
