Who am I?

Hi! I’m Maricla, the author of the ChangeMakers books—a collection of stand-alone novels united by strong female voices and meaningful social issues. Writing about what truly matters to me—human rights, as well as the deeper exploration of the human experience—has always been my passion. But for many reasons, I set it aside for a long time. With this collection, I’ve finally committed to bringing these stories to life.

My books are set in different time periods and often offer a glimpse into diverse cultures. No matter the main topic, whether it’s refugees, inner pain, mental health struggles, or something else,  I always strive to approach it with respect and thoughtfulness. Too many important issues are dismissed, and now more than ever, I believe we need genuine understanding and a willingness to share in others’ pain. Developing critical thinking is essential in today’s world.

I’m originally from Italy, but I’ve been living in beautiful Cambodia since July 2022. I’m a passionate solo traveler and have explored many countries, including Turkey, Sri Lanka, Kenya, and Japan. I travel not just for the love of it, but also because it allows me to connect with people from all walks of life. Along the way, I often encounter individuals and stories that spark ideas for my next book.

My books are written for young people but can be enjoyed by adults as well. Each one has been professionally edited by an American editor and includes discussion and self-reflection questions. If you read them, I’d love for you to leave a review on Goodreads or anywhere else!

Girls of Dust

Their lives couldn’t be more different – but are they?

Despite the advantages of wealth and a loving mother, fifteen-year-old Angel feels numb. She struggles to fit in at her California high school, longs for a relationship with her estranged father, and seeks something raw and authentic to make her feel alive. Desperate for relief, she turns to sex with her boyfriend and self-harm to escape her emotional pain.

Fifteen-year-old Yara and her two siblings flee their home in Syria after a bombing kills her parents, seeking safety in a refugee camp in Jordan. Although she’s grateful for the chance for a more prosperous life after being resettled in America, Yara is weighed down with the deep pain of adjusting to a new world in addition to the loss of her family and beloved homeland.

When their worlds collide at a Los Angeles high school, the girls slowly form a friendship, finding solace in each other’s presence as they face their own demons. As they sink deeper into pain, losing themselves in the process, will their bond be enough to pull them back?

This is a coming-of-age story about family, loss, pain, love, and the universal right to live a meaningful life.

Content warnings: self-harm, suicide and attempted suicide, drug abuse, sex, mental health hospitalization, PTSD, violence, war, anxiety, foster care, death of parents.

Notes from the author: This book delves into the pain that can drive someone to cope using self-harm. I recommend that teenage readers explore this book with the support of and discussion with a trusted adult.
