Where to Sleep in Phnom Penh
The moment I step into Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, crossing the lobby and welcomed by the warm smiles and heartfelt hospitality of the staff, I find myself transported to a parallel world where the hands of the clock seem to turn backward.
The comforts of the modern world and the exclusivity of every space—from the guest rooms to the restaurants and the shared areas in between—make for an unforgettable stay in Cambodia’s capital, where you can immerse yourself in the local culture while also enjoying a restorative escape from the city’s traffic and relentless pace.
What struck me most, however, was the way every detail and every setting carry guests back to another era—one that, perhaps, we all miss just a little.
Every time I returned to Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra after spending a few hours outside, the magic came alive again. I don’t know if everyone experiences it this way. Maybe it’s because as a writer I’ve always had a vivid imagination and a creative mind, but as I walked through the hotel’s gleaming corridors, I saw stories intertwine and characters appear before my eyes, so vivid in every detail that they seemed real.
And to me, they were.
A stay at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra offers luxury, elegance, meticulous attention to detail, a commitment to giving back, and an impressive choice of activities and restaurants where breakfast, lunch, and dinner become experiences of their own. Yet the true reason to choose this hotel, at least in my opinion, lies in the stories that seem to be waiting around every corner.
When you stop and catch sight of a rotary telephone or the black-and-white photographs hanging on the walls, they tell the story of a Phnom Penh that, at first glance, may seem to have disappeared. But if you look with your heart, it comes alive again—in a narrow alley, in the face of an elderly man, in the sense of connection with the city that your stay at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra awakens, becoming a bridge between past and present.
Note: My stay at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra was kindly offered by the property in exchange for this article. As always, my opinions are personal and honest.
Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra: Where the Past Comes to Life
I returned from a walk around the neighborhood, and the moment I stepped back into Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, still smiling after a lovely conversation with a member of the staff who walked with me along the beautiful tree-lined drive leading from the hotel entrance to the front doors, I felt that familiar pull once again.
In my mind’s eye, I watched those stories unfold like the frames of a black-and-white film. In the hotel’s grand, elegant lobby, where every detail has been considered with such care that perfection feels completely effortless—like the grace of a ballerina dancing en pointe—I found myself surrounded once more by characters my imagination conjured, each one telling their story.
To me, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra is more than a hotel.
It is a place where life itself vibrates with the pulse of a timeless story.
I lifted my gaze toward the Cigar Chamber, an intimate and exclusive space where guests can enjoy premium Cuban cigars, and suddenly, in my imagination, three gentlemen appeared, as if they had stepped out of another time. They were dressed as they would have been in the 1920s: jacket, waistcoat, trousers, shirt, and tie.
I don’t know why, but they were British.
One of them was Alistair Sterling, an archaeologist who had just returned to Phnom Penh after exploring the magnificent temples of Angkor. The other two were representatives of the publishing house that would bring his book on Angkor to life, something destined to astonish the whole of England.
From his comfortable armchair, Alistair Sterling could see the lobby bar. There, groups of men gathered over glasses of Scotch, while elegant young women dressed in silk wore strings of pearls around their necks, catching the light every time they turned their heads.
I could have gone on for hours.
Of course, none of these people exist, nor have they ever existed.
This is the effect Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra has on me. It turns a simple stay into something far more profound.
It is a doorway into another era, an energy that wraps around you in every corner, and the warmth and professionalism of every member of staff you meet along the way.
But, above all, it is a story.
A story waiting to be written—as I did when I brought Mr. Alistair Sterling and the world I imagined around him to life—but also, and most importantly, a story that belongs to you.
Because the essence of Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra isn’t found only in its exclusivity, its attention to detail, its exquisite cuisine, or the extraordinary comfort of its accommodations. It lies in its rare ability to create something that few places can truly offer.
A story that connects us all, while remaining entirely your own.
The Highlights at a Glance
- The staff. Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra combines luxury and elegance, but what struck me most was the people who bring this place to life: the staff. Everyone I met was genuinely welcoming and attentive, and a few encounters really stayed with me. There was Phanna, who served my dinner at Do Forni, the hotel’s Italian restaurant — we talked about all kinds of things, and the conversation flowed as easily as if we’d known each other for years. There was the manager of that same restaurant, and the breakfast manager at La Coupole, the hotel’s French brasserie. And there was Rihk, who greeted me with a smile and told me stories about India, his home country, once he learned I’d be visiting for the first time this October. I also had the chance to talk with several people from the management and marketing team, every single one of them wonderful. Among them was Lou-Anne, who gave me bookmarks she’d made by hand herself, simply because I’d mentioned how much I love reading — and who also made sure I found some Italian pastries waiting for me in my room.
I could share many more moments like these, but the message, I think, is clear: open your eyes and your heart, and at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra you won’t find only people ready to take care of you — you’ll find people who, through their kindness, their stories, and the small moments you share with them, become part of the memory of your stay in Phnom Penh.
- Attention to detail. One might wonder: “What exactly does Maricla mean when she talks about attention to detail?” The answer is simple: at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, you feel it everywhere. I’ll return to this theme more than once in this article, but for now I want to focus on the small touches that, in my opinion, reveal a level of care that goes well beyond expectations. When I got back to my room, I found a bookmark tucked inside the book I was reading. There was also a clothesline for hanging my swimsuit after a swim in the pool, along with other small details that told me something I deeply value: that someone had paid attention not just to the guest, but to the person.
- A city within the city. To me, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra is a “city within a city.” The hotel is vast, a microcosm all its own — you could spend an entire day there without ever feeling bored, and you’d still probably fall short of experiencing everything it has to offer. Between its many restaurants, two swimming pools, fitness center, tennis courts, spa, an art gallery, meeting and event spaces, and wedding venues — all linked by beautiful, spacious corridors — Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra isn’t simply a place to stay. It’s a city within a city, a world with its own rhythm, its own spaces, and its own stories waiting to be discovered.
Location
Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra enjoys an excellent location in the heart of the old district, within easy walking distance to AEON Shopping Mall, which can also be conveniently reached by buggy directly from the hotel.
Welcome and Comfort
From the moment you arrive at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, prepare to be pampered and welcomed as though you were a celebrity. As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by a smiling and professional team who offered me a delightful tea and even a complimentary bouquet of flowers.
What truly sets the staff apart is the rare balance between genuine warmth and expertise. You immediately feel that you can rely on them for anything you may need, while at the same time enjoying the feeling of chatting with a friend—someone who knows Phnom Penh intimately, can guide you in the right direction, and is always ready to answer your questions.
Rooms & Suites
The accommodation you choose will be your own corner of paradise in Phnom Penh. Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra offers a wide range of room types, suites included. Here are the options in front of you, each one an invitation to feel like a king or queen during your stay in the Cambodian capital:
· Superior Room
· Luxury Room
· Junior Family Suite
· Junior Suite
· Prestige Suite
· Opera Suite
The square footage changes from one to the next, and so do a few of the finer touches, but every single room and suite shares the same DNA: space, elegance, and refinement. And each one comes with the Sofitel MY BED, your standing invitation to a truly deep night’s sleep.
My experience: I stayed in a Luxury King Bedroom Balcony, and I’ll be honest — as much as I loved exploring the city, there were moments I genuinely missed my room, and the hotel itself. That was exactly what Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra did to me. Phnom Penh can be an intense city, especially for anyone visiting Asia for the first time, and every room or suite at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra makes you feel completely looked after, as if you were wrapped in a bubble of attention, calm, and exclusivity.
My room held a magnificent Sofitel MY BED, where I slept like I’d been lifted onto a cloud. There was a sitting area, a desk, a bathroom with the shower and toilet thoughtfully separated, and a thousand small details I kept discovering, one after another, all of them adding to how extraordinary the stay felt. But the real crown jewel was the view. From up there, I watched Phnom Penh shift and glow through the different hours of the day and evening, letting myself get lost in it for a few quiet minutes, comfortably settled into one of the armchairs out on the balcony.
Dining: Food That Elevates the Experience
Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra offers a whole range of restaurants that turn your stay into something close to paradise. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and brunch — every meal here becomes something more than the simple act of eating. Whether you’re on your own, with family, with your loved one, or with friends, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra knows how to deliver unforgettable flavors, drawing from Asian and European cuisine alike.
Here’s an overview of what to expect from the restaurants at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, both in terms of food and atmosphere.
- Do Forni. Let’s start with the Italian restaurant, where I had dinner both nights of my stay — and where I found something far richer than just a corner of Italy in the heart of the Cambodian capital. I’ve lived here in Cambodia for four years now, and although I’ve eaten at Italian restaurants before, this was the place where I truly felt like I was tasting the food of my home country. The atmosphere is somehow warm and elegant at the same time, the waiters serve you with real professionalism and just as much warmth, and the menu takes you through one mouthwatering dish after another. What’s on offer shifts with seasonal updates, but picture yourself seated in Do Forni’s elegant, exclusive setting, ready to dig into pizza, pasta, appetizers, soups, risottos, and desserts, everything from the simplest comfort dish to the most refined creation. I was especially delighted to find, right there on the menu, nothing less than cacciucco — the celebrated dish of Livornese tradition, from the very city where I was born and raised. A special mention has to go to the tiramisù, which I ordered both nights: an explosion of flavor and, at the same time, a delicate pleasure that melts on your tongue.
- La Coupole. Start your day at this elegant restaurant with a breakfast built to please every palate, whether you’re drawn to Asian flavors or European ones. Led by Executive Chef Driss Helali, who brings 20 years of hospitality talent and experience to Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, La Coupole serves breakfast with live cooking stations where you can watch the chefs at work, alongside an à la carte menu and a full buffet. Don’t miss the brunch held every Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., featuring foie gras, lobster, French oysters, Hokkaido scallops, homemade ice cream, and so much more. Last but certainly not least, you can step into that same old-world atmosphere that followed me throughout my entire visit by sitting down for afternoon tea: foie gras with fig chutney, passion fruit éclairs, and mango tartlets, paired with a sparkling Bellini, barista-made coffee, and premium teas poured without limit. La Coupole also stands out for its elegant design and sophisticated atmosphere, thanks to The Pavilion, whose sweeping windows open onto a stunning view of the grounds and the pool. La Coupole is especially well suited for events, anniversaries, birthdays, and romantic dinners.
- Fu Lu Zu. A destination for lovers of Chinese cuisine, Fu Lu Zu is led by Chef JianFeng He, who brings 20 years of culinary experience. Discover an authentic selection of Cantonese dim sum, freshly prepared with traditional flavors and techniques. The Dim Sum Collection is available from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., priced at $19++ per person from Monday to Friday and $22++ per person on weekends and public holidays.
- Hachi. Get ready to be swept into a feast for the senses with the new menu, starring sushi, sashimi, and Japanese specialties, all prepared with the freshest, highest-quality ingredients. Among the standout offerings are the Sushi All You Can Roll ($35++ per person, Saturdays only) and the Hachi Bento Lunch Set (Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.).
- Le Bar. Here’s another one of those places that makes me picture stories from bygone eras, brought back to life at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra. At Le Bar, contemporary charm takes you by the hand into a lively atmosphere built around craft cocktails and a curated selection of fine spirits.
- Phokeethra Sports Bar. The perfect spot to enjoy a healthy meal or a refreshing drink after making the most of the hotel’s sports and fitness facilities.
- Cigar Chamber. This is where my imagination “saw” Mr. Alistair Sterling and the whole world I stitched together around him. Step inside, and you too will feel like you’ve traveled back in time, into an elegant, exclusive corner made for enjoying premium Cuban cigars. The cigars come in a range of formats and flavors.
Wellness and Fitness
Whether you love unwinding by the pool or want to stay in shape even while traveling, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra has you covered.
- Phokeethra Sports Club. This luxurious sports club features state-of-the-art fitness equipment, a variety of classes, personalised training programmes and excellent recreational facilities, including a squash court, four tennis courts and one of the best swimming pools in the city.
- SOFITEL FITNESS. Designed for travelers looking to keep up their routine while away from home, just as much as for those trying fitness for the very first time, SOFITEL FITNESS is a fully equipped center on the hotel’s second floor, with cardio machines, stationary bikes, treadmills, weights, and everything you need for a complete workout. Qualified instructors are on hand to guide you every step of the way.
- Sofitel Spa. I was genuinely touched that management offered me a complimentary treatment — though, since I’ve always struggled with sensitive skin, I decided to pass on it this time. Still, I stopped by the spa lobby, where I was greeted by smiling, professional staff and an atmosphere that already hints at the pampering and well-being to come. The spa is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and centers on innovative aromatherapy and massage techniques. Its certified specialists have developed custom treatments and massage oil blends designed to release tension and ease sore muscles, each one drawing inspiration from the four natural elements — air, water, earth, and fire. Choose from holistic or therapeutic treatments, aromatherapy, or natural remedies that blend Western and Eastern medicine. The spa also gives you a full picture of your health, pairing the expertise of its therapists with advanced technology.
- An Exclusive Pool for Guests. Relax and treat yourself to a swim in the spacious, elegant pool, just steps from the Italian restaurant Do Forni and visible through the windows of La Coupole. Every late afternoon, once I’d made it back from exploring the city, I gave myself a rejuvenating half hour by this pool. I especially loved the Jacuzzi section, along with the warmth and professionalism of the staff.
Meetings and Events
If you’re traveling for business, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra is the perfect choice for hosting events of every kind. From the spacious Grand Ballroom, which can hold up to 1,200 guests, to Arun and Amrit, ideal for business meetings, conferences, and seminars, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra offers a location right in the heart of Phnom Penh, making it easy for attendees to reach your event.
The conference rooms are also equipped with cutting-edge technology, backed by a Meeting Planner who can guide you from idea to reality, so your event turns out unforgettable. Put your trust in years of industry experience, and watch your event come to life.
Weddings at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra: Where Fairy Tales Come True
Imagine saying the most important “I do” of your life in an elegant setting, where romantic touches elevate every single moment. Pause to take in views that feel plucked straight from a dream, and let the Wedding Planners lead the way as they turn your vision into an unforgettable day.
Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra offers the Grand Ballroom which, at 1,430 square meters, can welcome up to 1,200 guests. Sophisticated chandeliers cast light over scenes worthy of a fairy tale, while cutting-edge technology helps shape the occasion into something both refined and thoroughly modern.

And speaking of food — meals are an essential part of any wedding celebration, and at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, you can count on a catering team ready to bring the finest dishes to your table, drawn from a range of cuisines, Japanese and Italian included.
A Stay That Gives Back
If you’ve been following me for a while, you already know I champion ethical, responsible travel — the kind that leaves something real behind for the people who call a place home. At Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, luxury, exclusivity, and attention to detail go hand in hand, but the hotel doesn’t stop there. It keeps making a genuine, lasting difference in the lives of Cambodian people.
Education is at the heart of that mission. The motto “Creating Opportunities, Building Futures” says it all — and it’s not just words on a wall. It’s years of real, lived partnerships with hospitality schools like Pour un Sourire d’Enfant (PSE), Project Khmer H.O.P.E, École Paul Dubrule, Meth Samlanh, and Spoon Cambodia, alongside international institutions such as Les Roches School in Switzerland, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, and Beijing Foreign Studies University.
From 2020 to 2026, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra has helped change hundreds of young lives for the better, through internships, hands-on multidisciplinary training, and programs built around leadership and growth. Many of these young people went on to become part of the Sofitel family themselves.
Staying at this beautiful five-star hotel also means embracing a vision — one that turns into real, concrete action, giving young men and women the chance to learn, grow, and build a future for themselves in hospitality.
But the story doesn’t end there. Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra also supports entire communities, standing behind local organizations, schools, and grassroots initiatives that bring real, positive change to the country.
For the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra team, true luxury has always meant something more than elegant spaces or exquisite detail — it means lifting up the community around them. Through music, art, and shared purpose, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra keeps telling a story of connection, one that opens real doors for the people it touches.
Since 2017, the hotel has also hosted charity concerts, several of them born from its beautiful partnership with Musica Felice. The proceeds go on to support organizations doing extraordinary work — The Peace Center, Give a Hand for Hope, Sala Baï Hotel & Restaurant School, Tiny Toones Cambodia, and Project Khmer H.O.P.E.
Personally, I believe this kind of commitment is one of the most important things to look for when choosing where to stay. In this article, I’ve been sharing with you that unmistakable feeling of stepping back in time at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, the details, the refinement, the comfort and elegance of the rooms and suites and every shared space, and the wonderful range of experiences on-site — the spa, the fitness facilities, the restaurants — each meal good enough to make you feel like you’re on top of the world.
What stays with me most, though, is the love Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra has for this beautiful country — a love that shows up in real, concrete ways, changing so many local lives for the better. The small moments of human warmth I experienced firsthand during my stay speak to something larger: a philosophy of giving, where raising up a community also means enriching who we are as people.
Because that’s exactly what Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra understands: a country only truly thrives when its people do.
Vive la France!
The moment you set foot inside Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, the French joie de vivre shines through, meeting Cambodian culture with real class and elegance.
During my stay, I got to experience firsthand that unmistakably French way of looking at life: a cocktail in hand, your gaze wandering over the people gathered in the hall, settling for a moment on a detail in the art gallery, or lingering on a gesture, a sound, a fleeting expression.
Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra carries the best of French tradition and style into Cambodia, rooted in a legacy that goes all the way back to the very first Sofitel, which opened its doors in Strasbourg in 1964.
Today, the Sofitel name lives on in luxury hotels scattered across the globe, so even if Cambodia isn’t next on your list, that same hospitality is waiting for you elsewhere. A few cities worth knowing:
- Europe: Rome, Paris, and Amsterdam.
· Middle East: Dubai and Riyadh.
· Africa: Cairo and Marrakech.
· Asia: Hanoi, Seoul, Singapore.
· Pacific: Sydney, Adelaide, and Auckland.
And the list of places where you can lose yourself in the luxury, heart, and exclusivity that define Sofitel doesn’t end there. Click here for the full list.
Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra: Where Past and Present Meet
Imagine opening your eyes slowly, sunk into a cloud of comfort, every part of you feeling restored. You’ve just woken up in the Sofitel MY BED, in your room or suite at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, and for a moment, you don’t move. You just breathe.
You get up slowly, noticing that your shoulders don’t carry that tightness they usually do. You pull back the curtains, and there it is: Phnom Penh, glimmering under the morning sun. In the distance, a temple roof sits easily beside the modern skyline, and the Mekong curls quietly through the city, like something ancient stretching itself awake.
Everything slows down here. Every glance, every word you share with the people you love, feels a little more deliberate, a little more felt. As you walk the elegant corridors, a delicate floral scent fills the air. Let Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra fold you into its quiet elegance. Breakfast at La Coupole becomes its own small ritual — a warm exchange with a member of staff, your eyes drifting toward the pool, cradled in green, and for a few minutes, nothing else exists.
Go out and explore, guided by the staff’s own favorite corners of the city, or stay and simply indulge yourself. At Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, both are equally right. This isn’t just a five-star hotel, and it isn’t just a city within a city — it’s a place that seems built specifically to give you back a little time with yourself, and with the people you love most.
Whatever you need, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra seems to already know it — a quiet corner to focus and create, or permission to let go of everything and simply be taken care of, body and soul. The whole place feels lifted from an old black-and-white photograph of the city, and that’s exactly what makes it magical. An old-style radio sits in your room, booklet and all, filling the space with music from another era, and somehow, it changes how you see yourself. Because here, nothing stays still. Everything shifts, moves, transforms — quietly, constantly, almost like a spell.
The restaurants carry you elsewhere without you ever stepping outside — from the heart of Phnom Penh straight into France, Italy, Japan, China, each one its own small journey. The bar and the Cigar Chamber invite you to gather with others, or simply to sit with your own thoughts for a while. And your room, your suite — that’s yours alone, a private world where old and new sit comfortably together, and every detail, however small, has been placed there on purpose, for your comfort.
Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra stays with you long after you’ve left. Catch your reflection in a mirror as you pass, and you might notice something you haven’t seen in a while: a piece of jewelry you pulled out of a drawer for the first time in years, a smile that comes easily, a light in your eyes that surprises even you.
Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra holds you gently, without ever asking anything of you, and somehow, the weight you didn’t even know you were carrying starts to lift. Here, every moment feels worth remembering — your eyes a little clearer, your mind a little more present, the future quietly waiting just beyond another door.
Today, there is only the past and the present — like lovers who search for one another, meet, and drift apart again, wandering the floors of this elegant hotel. Because who we are today is shaped by who we were yesterday.
A stay at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra is luxury. It’s care. It’s excellence. But underneath all of that, it’s something quieter: a journey into the past — and, above all, a journey home to yourself.
